Geranium phaeum ‘Samobor’ – Dusky Cranesbill

Geranium phaeum ‘Samobor’ is a striking and dependable hardy perennial, valued for its rich dusky purple flowers and distinctive marked foliage. Flowering in late spring and early summer, the elegant blooms rise above handsome leaves patterned with dark maroon blotches, creating interest even when the plant is not in flower.

Reaching around 60–75 cm in height with a spread of 45–60 cm, this clump-forming perennial develops into a strong, upright plant with excellent presence in borders and shaded areas. The deeply cut green foliage emerges in spring, each leaf often marked with dramatic dark zones that add texture and contrast throughout the growing season.

The nodding purple flowers are carried on slender stems above the foliage and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Geranium ‘Samobor’ is particularly effective in woodland gardens, mixed borders, underplanting shrubs, or naturalistic planting schemes where both flower and foliage can be appreciated.

This hardy perennial thrives in partial shade or full shade, though it will also tolerate sun in moist soil. It prefers fertile, well-drained ground and is easy to grow with very little maintenance. Cutting back after flowering can refresh the foliage and encourage a tidy second flush of growth.

Flowering Period

May – June: Deep dusky purple flowers begin to appear above marked foliage

June – July: Peak flowering with elegant blooms on tall stems

Summer onwards: Decorative foliage continues to provide colour and texture

With its unusual foliage, elegant flowers, and reliable shade performance, Geranium phaeum ‘Samobor’ is an excellent low-maintenance perennial for adding depth and character to borders and woodland-style planting.
