Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ – Japanese Skimmia
Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage and striking red flower buds that provide colour and interest throughout the winter months. The plant forms neat clusters of deep red buds from autumn onwards, creating a vibrant display when much of the garden is dormant.
In early to mid-spring, these buds open into fragrant creamy-white flowers that sit above the rich green evergreen leaves. The flowers are lightly scented and attract early pollinators, making this shrub both decorative and wildlife-friendly.
Growing to around 80–100 cm in height with a similar spread, Skimmia ‘Rubella’ forms a tidy, rounded shrub that works beautifully in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and containers. Its evergreen foliage ensures the plant remains attractive throughout the year.
This variety is particularly valued for its long-lasting winter buds, which provide colour from late autumn right through to spring. Skimmia ‘Rubella’ is a male variety, meaning it produces the showy flower buds but does not form berries.
Skimmia thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. It is ideal for woodland-style planting and sheltered garden areas where the soil remains cool and moist.
