Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – Ornamental Sage

Salvia ‘Caradonna’ is a striking and popular perennial known for its tall spikes of deep violet-purple flowers and distinctive dark purple stems. This elegant plant adds strong vertical interest and vibrant colour to borders throughout the summer months.

Flowering from early summer onwards, slender spikes of rich purple blooms rise above compact clumps of aromatic grey-green foliage. The dark stems intensify the colour of the flowers, creating a dramatic contrast that stands out beautifully in sunny borders.

Growing to around 50–60 cm in height with a spread of 40–50 cm, Salvia ‘Caradonna’ forms neat, upright clumps that work well in mixed borders, cottage gardens, and pollinator-friendly planting schemes.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, performing particularly well in dry or sunny positions once established. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Cutting back the spent flower spikes after the first flush can often encourage a second round of blooms later in the summer, helping to extend the flowering season.

Flowering Period

June: Flower spikes begin to appear above the foliage

June – July: Peak flowering with tall purple spires

Late summer: A second flush may occur if plants are cut back

With its dramatic flower spikes and long flowering period, Salvia ‘Caradonna’ is an excellent choice for adding colour, structure, and pollinator interest to sunny garden borders.
