Primula ‘Gold Lace’ – Gold Lace Primrose
Primula ‘Gold Lace’ is a charming and distinctive spring-flowering perennial admired for its richly coloured, vintage-style blooms. Each flower features deep maroon to burgundy petals edged with a delicate golden-yellow rim and a bright yellow centre, giving the plant its traditional “gold lace” appearance.
Flowering in early to mid-spring, these striking blooms rise above neat rosettes of textured green foliage, bringing welcome colour to borders, containers, and cottage-style plantings just as the garden begins to come back to life.
Growing to around 15–20 cm in height with a spread of 20–25 cm, Primula ‘Gold Lace’ forms compact clumps that work beautifully at the front of borders, along pathways, or planted in groups for a colourful early-season display.
This hardy primrose thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is particularly well suited to woodland gardens, shaded borders, and cool garden spots where the soil remains consistently moist.
Regular deadheading can help prolong the flowering period and keep plants looking tidy throughout the season.
Flowering Period
March – April: Flowering begins with rich burgundy and gold blooms
April – May: Peak flowering with vibrant clusters above fresh foliage
Late spring: Flowering gradually fades while foliage remains
With its unique colouring and traditional cottage garden charm, Primula ‘Gold Lace’ is a beautiful choice for adding early colour and character to shaded borders and spring garden displays.
