Ceanothus Blue mound 5L
Ceanothus ‘Blue Mound’ – Californian Lilac
Ceanothus ‘Blue Mound’, commonly known as Californian Lilac, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its dense habit and stunning late-spring display of vivid blue flowers. With glossy, dark green foliage and a naturally rounded form, it brings year-round structure and seasonal colour to borders, banks, and coastal or Mediterranean-style plantings.
Typically growing to around 1–1.5 metres in height and spread, ‘Blue Mound’ maintains a neat, mounding shape without the need for pruning. In late spring to early summer, it produces a profusion of tiny, rich blue flowers in fluffy clusters that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Ceanothus ‘Blue Mound’ is drought-tolerant once established and an excellent choice for dry gardens, south-facing walls, and low-maintenance borders. It performs best in sheltered spots, protected from cold winds and excessive winter wet.
Minimal care is required—simply remove spent flower heads if desired to maintain a tidy appearance. Its evergreen foliage provides valuable winter interest and makes it a reliable structural plant throughout the seasons.
Flowering Period
May: Flower buds begin to form
May – June: Masses of vivid blue blooms cover the shrub
July onwards: Flowering fades; evergreen foliage remains
With its intense flower colour, compact habit, and low-maintenance nature, Ceanothus ‘Blue Mound’ is a standout choice for small gardens, mixed borders, and wildlife-friendly spaces.
