Cornus Midwinter Fire 3L
Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ – Winter Flame Dogwood
Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ is a striking deciduous shrub grown primarily for its spectacular winter stem colour. As the leaves fall in autumn, the plant reveals a glowing display of fiery stems that blend shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a warm burst of colour in the winter garden.
Reaching approximately 1.5–2 metres in height with a similar spread, this hardy shrub forms a dense, multi-stemmed habit that works beautifully in mixed borders, wildlife gardens, and naturalistic planting schemes. During spring and summer, the plant produces fresh green foliage which provides a calm backdrop in the border, along with small clusters of creamy-white flowers in early summer.
As the season progresses into autumn, the foliage develops soft warm tones before dropping to reveal the plant’s signature flame-coloured winter stems, which become more intense in colder weather. Planted in groups, the colourful stems create a dramatic winter feature, especially against frost, snow, or dark evergreen backgrounds.
Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it is very adaptable and tolerant of a range of garden conditions once established. It is particularly effective near water features, at the back of borders, or planted in drifts for a natural winter display.
For the brightest stem colour, plants benefit from being cut back hard in early spring, encouraging fresh young stems that will produce the most vibrant winter colour the following year.
Seasonal Interest
May – June: Small creamy-white flowers appear
Summer: Fresh green foliage forms a dense shrub
Autumn: Leaves develop warm tones before falling
Winter: Fiery yellow, orange, and red stems create a striking display
With its glowing winter stems and easy-care nature, Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ is a superb shrub for bringing colour, structure, and seasonal interest to the garden throughout the year.
