Bergenia ‘Ouverture’ – Elephant’s Ears
Bergenia ‘Ouverture’ is a bold and reliable evergreen perennial valued for its large, glossy leaves and vibrant early-season flowers. In late winter to early spring, sturdy stems rise above the foliage carrying clusters of rich pink blooms, providing a welcome burst of colour when little else is flowering in the garden.
Reaching around 30–40 cm in height with a spread of 40–50 cm, this hardy plant forms dense clumps of thick, leathery leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. The foliage often takes on attractive reddish or bronze tones during colder months, adding winter interest to borders and garden beds.
The upright flower stems appear from early spring, carrying bright pink bell-shaped flowers that are excellent for attracting early pollinators. Bergenia ‘Ouverture’ is particularly useful for edging paths, planting at the front of borders, or creating groundcover in partially shaded areas.
This tough and adaptable perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and grows best in moist, well-drained soil, though it tolerates drier conditions once established. It is also a great choice for difficult spots, including areas beneath trees or along shaded boundaries.
Removing old or damaged leaves in spring will keep plants looking tidy and encourage fresh new growth.
