Anemone ‘Blue Shades’ – Grecian Windflower

Anemone ‘Blue Shades’ is a charming spring-flowering perennial prized for its delicate, daisy-like blooms in soft tones of blue, lavender, and violet. These elegant flowers appear above finely divided, fern-like foliage, bringing a natural, woodland feel to borders, pathways, and underplanting schemes.

Flowering from early to mid-spring, this low-growing plant creates a beautiful carpet of colour just as the garden begins to wake from winter. Each flower features a bright golden centre surrounded by silky blue petals that gently open in sunlight and close during cooler, overcast conditions.

Reaching around 10–15 cm in height and spreading 20–30 cm wide, Anemone ‘Blue Shades’ forms attractive clumps that gradually naturalise over time. It works particularly well planted in drifts beneath deciduous trees, along the front of borders, or mixed with other early spring favourites such as primroses, muscari, and tulips.

This easy-to-grow plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Once established, it is reliable and low maintenance, returning each spring with increasing vigour.

After flowering, the foliage gradually dies back as summer approaches, allowing later-emerging plants to take centre stage in the border.

Flowering Period

March – April: Flowering begins, blue and lavender blooms emerge above fresh foliage

April – May: Peak flowering, creating a colourful spring carpet

Late spring: Foliage begins to fade as plants enter dormancy

With its soft blue hues and natural woodland character, Anemone ‘Blue Shades’ is perfect for bringing early-season colour and gentle movement to borders, containers, and naturalised garden areas.
