Sedum Autumn Joy 2L
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ – Stonecrop
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (also known as Hylotelephium ‘Herbstfreude’) is a reliable, long-season perennial prized for its strong architectural form, succulent foliage, and changing flower colour through the year. Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and wildlife-friendly spaces, it adds structure, late-season interest, and excellent drought tolerance.
Forming upright clumps 50–60cm tall and wide, ‘Autumn Joy’ produces fleshy, blue-green leaves that give way in late summer to domed clusters of small, starry flowers. Starting out pale pink, the flowerheads deepen to rose and finally rich copper-red as the season advances, often holding their shape into winter and offering extended visual appeal.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, this sedum is exceptionally low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, echinacea, and rudbeckia, and is highly attractive to bees and butterflies throughout its bloom period.
Cut back the stems in late winter or early spring, once the dried flowerheads have provided winter interest. Clumps may be divided every few years to maintain vigour.
Flowering Period
August: Pink flowerheads begin to form and open
September – October: Peak bloom; colour deepens to rich bronze-red
November – December: Dried flowerheads persist, adding winter texture
With its seasonal colour shift, tidy habit, and pollinator appeal, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a valuable and dependable addition to any sunny garden
